Civita di Bagnoregio
Concorso Internazionale (secondo premio)
S Civita di Bagnoregio, the “dying city”, is what remains of an ancient Etruscan city. It stands on a rocky spur. This isolation is the result of an unstoppable erosion that sees the tufa spur gradually thinning under the erosive action of atmospheric agents. The design approach chosen was to maintain the structure of the existing walkway, widening its deck section, reinforcing the structure and limiting its current environmental impact. This was done using a corten steel sheet outer coating. Material already oxidized, which has already undergone an “erosion” process like the sides of the gullies. Also to emphasize this idea of erosion, as well as to limit the wind pressure, it was decided to use an oxidized sheet with various hole sizes, giving a delicate image, shaded, fragile. Such walls are suitable for the growth of native climbing plants, so that a kind of interpénétration between nature and built is formed over time. To ensure adequate permeability to the work, some holes for the transverse passage have been prepared under the gangway. These holes are located partly at the parking lot for the passage of cars, and partly along the route to ensure the crossing of animals and hikers, as well as any agricultural vehicles.
